One doesn’t have to think twice before getting a tattoo anymore because tattoos as we all thought are not permanent anymore. Science has progressed by leaps and bounds and today there are various methods available to get your tattoo removed.

So if you are amongst those who are rethinking your ink then we have some good news for you. Dr. Divya’s Skin and Hair Solutions is the first clinic in Whitefield, Bangalore to introduce World Class ‘Spectra Gold’ Laser for Tattoo removal.

Removal Of Tattoo Using Spectra Gold Laser
The Spectra Gold Laser uses a beam of light to lighten or completely remove your tattoo ink from your skin. Since the tattoo is made up of ink particles, the heat from the light emitted from the lasers breaks these particles into smaller particles which are then easily absorbed by the immune system of the human body.

What Is The Procedure Like?
At Dr. Divya’s Skin and Hair Solutions, we follow the following steps to remove the tattoo ink:

Step 1: Dr. Divya Sharma examines the size of your tattoo and depending on its age, design, the colors used, the type of ink used and how dark the tattoo is, she decides the number of sessions it would require to remove your tattoo.

Step 2: During the session, a numbing cream is applied on the tattoo region. One doesn’t need anaesthesia for this procedure.

Step 3: Laser is targeted on the skin area with the tattoo. A session usually lasts for 10-30 minutes.

Post each session, once the skin has absorbed the particles, the tattoo area may appear to be white, reddish and swollen. Don’t fret, this is normal. The swelling and redness vanishes within weeks of each treatment and the skin regains its original tone after 6-12 months of the last treatment.

One may require repeated sessions depending on the kind of tattoo they have. Usually a gap of 4-8weeks is kept between each session to allow the skin to get rid of as much pigment as possible.
Other Available Methods Of Tattoo Removal:

Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is an invasive tattoo removal procedure wherein your doctor uses a medical grinding tool to remove the outer layers of the skin which contains the ink. It is a painful procedure which is conducted usually with local anaesthesia and in some cases even general anaesthesia. The wound takes a long time to heal and one may even have to go for repeated sessions.

Surgical Method
Surgical method is another invasive method which surgically removes the skin that contains the tattoo. This leaves a scar behind and like dermabrasion, it is conducted with a local anaesthesia. This is not a practical treatment for big tattoos.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use mild acids that are applied on the skin to remove the outer layer of the skin which contains the ink of the tattoo. This is not a painless procedure and it might cause moderate pain. The recovery time may be up to one week depending on the wound.

Frequently asked questions

We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common ones.

1. How Are Tattoos Removed?

The laser uses a beam of light to significantly lighten or completely remove the tattoo. When the ink particles absorb the light from the laser, they are broken into fragments and then absorbed through the body’s immune system. This process generally takes a few weeks. The large the size of tattoo, the more sessions it will take to break the ink particles.

2. What Will My Skin Look Like After Treatment?

Right after the treatment, your skin will have a white discoloration, and the area around the tattoo may become reddish and appear swollen. This is very normal and will vanish slowly over time. Results will appear after 5 weeks of treatment. Immediately after the treatment one must apply antibacterial ointment and gauze will be applied to the treated area to minimize infection.

3. Are There Any Side Effects?

Usually, whitening of the skin may occur after the tattoo removal. However, the normal skin tone will return within 6 -12 months following the last treatment session. The ink which is used in tattooing can differ from tattoo to tattoo, some patients have only partial clearing even after several sessions. It depends on the color and depth of the tattoo ink and the wavelength absorbed by that color.

4. Tattoo Removal Options?

The other options are cryosurgery, dermabrasion or excision, which are painful and often result in scarring. Laser treatments are safer. They are less invasive and only target the ink used in the tattoo process. Lasers are now modern standard for tattoo removal, specifically the Q-switched laser.

5. What Is The Treatment Like?

Some patients say that they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Many treatments do not require local anesthesia.

6. How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required for optimal results depends on the size, location, depth, and color of the tattoo. Treatment should take place for 4 – 8 weeks apart in order to allow the body to remove the maximum amount of tattoo pigment after each treatment. Each session usually takes 10 – 30 minutes. You will continue to see the lightening of your tattoo after each treatment as your body disposes of more pigment.
